Personality

Ben and Maya dressed for Christmas partyThe setting:

We are on our way to a company Christmas party; Maya is elated to have an excuse to wear a fluffy purple dress, white tights and white heels.

Ben is groaning, having been forced to change into new dress pants in the car after an emergency trip to Target — he wears dress clothes so seldom, he grows out of the pants EVERY TIME.

The moment:

We’re all hungry, and a bit frazzled after getting everyone into nice clothes (plus the emergency Target excursion). Ben hates getting his picture taken, and he REALLY hates getting it taken with his sister.

The result:

A snapshot of this moment in time, with Maya thrilled, Ben irritated, and a snippet of their childhood recorded in pictures.

Siblings

A brother and sister run hand in hand

Sometimes I feel like Maya and Ben are really raising (rearing?) each other, and Marti and I are just around to make sure nothing catches on fire. When Ben was four, we spent a lot of time playing with him; now that Maya is four, she spends a lot of time playing with her brother. I never really understood the love between siblings until Maya was born; the way her brother held her tiny hand, or was so proud of her. When she started crawling, and people asked him if he was teaching her to walk, his response was: No, I’m teaching her to run. Sure enough, he succeeded.

Morning Coffee

This morning, after coaching cross-country, I took Maya to our favorite coffee shop and we played a card game, had a pastry and I had a mocha before heading off to work and school. She’s making a funny face here, although it’s partly in shadow, but I love this photo because it picks up what makes her beautiful — the little wave in her hair, her sparkly eyes, her sass. I am constantly grateful for my job  – getting to spend time with my children, particularly when they’re little like this, is precious. These are the years to remember, and no amount of dollars in this world will change that.
