Recently a student of mine came several thousand miles to visit me. Yes, purely to visit me. Times like these I am overwhelmed by some of the friendships I have acquired in my life. I am known for looking on the dark side of things; for anticipating tragedy rather than expecting everything to work out. Yet, sometimes I am awed by how amazing people can be. In return for Satoko flying for 14+ hours to see me, I reciprocated by taking her to see some hotties (yes, Nadeem, this means you. I can see you blushing from here).
The other way I showed my appreciation was by inflicting my children on Satoko. Repeatedly.
As Japanese people tend to do, Satoko politely protested that she likes my children. She did this while Ben was making farting noises and dragging Maya across the kitchen floor. I didn’t believe her for a moment.
Unfortunately, I became very ill the last day and Satoko did some 4th Avenue shopping on her own while I writhed in agony at home. I was so ill, my doctor actually agreed to see me on the same day I called. Yes, don’t be startled; I am not telling an untruth. Not only that, not a single nurse made the comment that “we don’t just hand out prescriptions (for antibiotics) like candy,” which is an actual comment made to me by a nurse when I had a temperature of 104 and a raging ear infection. So, today was worse than that. Yes, really.
Nevertheless, Satoko seemed to have a good time, and I was thrilled to see her. So, now the pressure is on…when will Missy travel to Japan again?
Take care and safe travel, Sa-chan.
