Greenspan — on my side

One of the things Marti and I have started doing the past few years is learning about finances. This all started back in D.C., when we were introduced to the concept of investing money (we were also introduced to the concept of having money period, but that’s another story). We saved and saved, and I read a lot of investment brochures. Then we promptly had kids and it all went out the window.

Nevertheless, we have continued to read and discuss various investment strategies, and even put a tentative toe into the swirling waters of stocks. We’ve looked into real estate and discussed the meaning of “equity fund.”

Marti and I agree on most things, but we have a fundamental disagreement about economics. Now, I think that my theory is the best, primarily because we usually make money on it. This is primarily because I actually invest the money, rather than thinking about investing it.

But in essence, I am a psychological investor. I look at people’s attitudes and try to guess what they’ll do. For example, if a stock crashes, it gets my attention. If it splits, I find that a good time to buy — people’s attitudes are positive, more people are selling, etc. Marti disagrees. For him, it is math. Two stocks at $25 are the same as one at $50. Sure, that’s true enough. But for me, money is an idea; math is just a convenient way to tabulate it. And, it turns out that Alan Greenspan agrees with me.

Alan. Greenspan. Agrees.

While I don’t like to dance around, shouting, “I WIN!!! I WIN!!!” (okay, I sort of do) I would like to feature the video that supports me:

Karate vs. Judo

Ben had his first Judo class tonight. He had wanted to do karate, which I prefer as well, but the dojo down the street is good, cheap, traditional, and doesn’t do karate until a child is over 17. Not sure what that’s all about, but rather than drive him across town, I enrolled him in Judo.

He was a bit disappointed there was no kicking or hitting involved, so I decided to show him some videos of Judo matches on YouTube so he could get the idea. Well, that ended up being a bit boring, because honestly, karate is just bad-ass and a lot more fun to watch. There were several videos comparing the different types of martial arts, and those were pretty fun, so I did a Karate vs. Judo search and came up with this great video. I mean, it’s totally wordless and short, but it convinced Ben — Judo’s pretty bad-ass too.

More Japanese Television Delight

For those of you who might have been confused about the Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show, let me tell you that it is a parody of Japanese television. Before you laugh and point too much, remember that we are a nation that embraces shows like “American Idol” and “Survivor.” Really, people in pink tutus trying to jump hurdles while on a continuously spinning treadmill decorated in black and white stripes? IT’S NOTHING. At least nobody was voted off the show.

I actually am amused by Japanese television, and spent many a winter’s eve watching to see what trapped man would eat (a man trapped in a room, only able to eat what he won by writing postcards to contests in magazines. Of course he won a giant bag of dogfood first off) and what would happen to the guy dropped off in Okinawa with nothing but ten dollars (sen yen) in his pocket and told to get back to Osaka on his own devices. Those shows were entertaining, even if I didn’t understand every word. Other favorites included a man who dressed up like a giant poodle and walked through a big open market trying to hump everyone’s leg, and shows that demonstrated the Japanese mind, such as the one where everyone moves to the side if you ring a bike bell, regardless of whether or not you’re actually on a bike.

Anyway, here’s another choice slice of Japanese television for your entertainment. Enjoy!

My dad sent me this stellar video about a woman who revived a chicken using CPR. Pretty funny. :)
