20 Small Ways to Save the Planet

I continuously troll for finance news to add to my finance blog but I loved this article so much I wanted to post it here: 20 Small Ways to Save the Planet. Not only does it have cost-cutting tips but it also has a lot of useful information, like how to get rid of junk mail. I think junk mail is the most wasteful and disgusting thing ever. I throw away about half a pound of paper per day in junk mail, so I was thrilled to find I can opt out of a fair number of that stuff. I loved the organic flower delivery, too — for anyone thinking of me, my favorites are the chartreuse roses. (The fact that my highschool English teacher said that, if I were a color, I’d be chartreuse and orange — has nothing to do with it. You don’t see me picking orange roses, do you?)

Balance

It always amazes me how kids sleep. For the longest time, Ben slept with his bum in the air, his knees drawn up under him with his face planted on the mattress. Maya tends to sleep like a little curl, usually on her side with her toes pointed and her arms outstretched like a ballerina. Ben occasionally falls off the bed, but its rare and often we hardly notice because he doesn’t even wake up — he just gets up and gets right back on the bed.

Just so you know, he did not fall off the bed after this, although I went ahead and gave him a little push (back onto the bed, what were you thinking?). And if you’re wondering what on earth is on his pajamas, they are various types of fish. Don’t ask me, I don’t even remember buying them.

Why we miss Alane

While sorting through some things to pack or throw away, I came across this card, which I kept, because I love both quotes:

Missionaries, my dear! Don’t you realize that missionaries are the divinely provided food for destitute and underfed cannibals? Whenever they are on the brink of starvation, Heaven in its infinite mercy sends them a nice plump missionary. — Oscar Wilde

To live content with small means,
To seek elegance rather than luxury,
and refinement rather than fashion,
to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich,
to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly,
to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart,
to bear all cheerfully,
do all bravely,
await occasion,
hurry never –
In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious,
grow up through the common.
This is to be my symphony.
–William Ellery Channing

*big sigh* We miss Alane very much. I think that now that I have shared these I can finally toss this card that I have been hoarding now for 5 1/2 years. Alane herself would be horrified; she is a chronically neat person. Nevertheless, I love little nuggets like this. You can just imagine what a disaster this packing bit is, with dozens of “little nuggets” I have to toss.

Every move is a tiny death…
