Getting myself into trouble

Why do I do this to myself? I approached my boss about getting some more hours by asking if they were interested in offering ESL classes at the library, and now he wants me to teach two classes during the 6-hour time period I am there on Saturdays instead of one — essentially cutting out my prep time. Turns out they are desperate for an ESL teacher — 32 people are on a waiting list — and so now, suddenly, I feel an enormous amount of pressure to go ahead with it, even though I won’t get any additional pay and will have to prep during my free time. Why? Why?

Liberty vs. Freedom

Although we don’t have cable (read: no Comedy Central) and thus are deprived of such shows as Crank Yankers and Crossballs, I have recently become enamored of Jon Stewart after his amusing and truthful confrontation on Crossfire, which is now being cancelled. His recent assessment of George Bush’s inaugural speech, and his repeated uses of the words Freedom and Liberty is here. (Note to the computer-challenged: click on the underlined words).

Essential Toilet Instructions

I saw this and had to post it — thanks to alert comedian Dave Barry! Now you can actually see the real challenge of living in Japan. Not the language, or the cuisine, but the toilets. Enjoy!

Napoleon Dynamite

Horrible…wonderful…horrible. How can I describe it? I relived high school for 89 minutes. The horrible clothes, the horrible food, the wide open spaces, lack of jobs, high school caste system… even down to the student election speech. I did that, I ran for student office and crashed my speech, I sang it. Why did I do that? Sure, I was known for my singing, and sang the national anthem for basketball games, but it was really just insanity on my part. There was no standing ovation for me, only spitwads. But whoever wrote that surely must have gone to my high school (I just checked to make sure – they didn’t go to New Plymouth, but Jared and his wife, Jerusha Hess, might as well have). It was a beautiful — and painful — movie, and I’m glad we’ve all left moon boots behind. Buy a copy of it, if only to support one of few movies to be filmed in Idaho, or better yet — buy a copy for me.
